This Friday there are plenty of parties happening for Halloween. But for those of us who want to enjoy some live jazz, one of the best parties to hit will be the twocities in tune concert, the next installment of the excellent series featuring the musical adventures of Steve Sweeting and various vocalists.

They say in the City Weekend listing: “Free with costume. Well, free anyway, but why not have some fun?”

Concert promoting “The Color of Love” at twocities gallery

I’m a big fan of the music Steve and Jasmine have done on this album, which I’ve had the privilege of listening to in pre-release form. All the music on there is fantastic, and it’s a surprise that such simple instrumentation can still create the range of sounds they do on this recording. But also, as much as I dig the album, hearing their live performance of the music is sublime. I think it’s because one can see how the music is affecting everyone else, which makes it affect yourself even more!

And of course, every concert I’ve been to at twocities gallery has been great. I would even venture to say it is personally my favorite venue in town to play at, because everyone is there just to hear the music, and it’s not formal and uptight like a concert hall. Nearly every other venue in town that has regular jazz is still mostly about drinking and socializing, with jazz as a sort of background to create an atmosphere. Having the audience’s devoted attention really makes the musicians give extra-special performances.

Coco and Heidi at the Oriental tomorrow

These two jazz vocalists are among the best Shanghai has to offer, and their show tomorrow afternoon will see them accompanied by a very strong rhythm section as well. Part of a series of monthly jazz concerts put on by JZ clubp at the Oriental Arts Center, the show will also feature pianist Steve Sweeting, bassist Tinho Pereira, and drummer Ronnie Williams. Final “twocities in tune” concert of spring series this Friday

These concerts keep getting better and better. The twocities in tune concerts have traditionally featured Steve Sweeting on piano joined by a vocalist, and the last one I heard with Jasmine Chen on vocals was off the hook. This time, Steve is going all-out and bringing in bass and drums to join him and vocalist Coco Zhao to make the final concert in the spring series a show-stopper. Playing bass will be Scott Dodd and on drums will be Charlie Foldesh.

Jasmine and Steve duet performance March 28

Steve Sweeting knows how to bring creativity out of vocalists. Having worked with a number of local singers in Shanghai since he moved out here almost two years ago, he has produced a number of concerts and even a few albums already with many of Shanghai’s best singers. His popular ongoing vocal-piano duo concert series at Twocities gallery “Twocities in tune,” has always been well-attended, as they tend to premier new music and ideas. Even people who have heard these singers before are amazed at these concerts because there’s always plenty of completely new stuff.

This concert, featuring Jasmine Chen on vocals, should be no exception. The two of them have been working hard, writing new lyrics to some old tunes, and coming up with plenty of new ones as well. It is the beginning of the latest season in the ongoing “Twocities in tune” series.

I’ve recently become a fan of Twocities gallery on facebook, in case you want to get info from them about all their events that would be another good way to do so.
