Jazz concerts over the CNY holidays
A few special shows are scheduled to take place during the Chinese New Year holiday week, including one on chu xi (Chinese New Years Eve, Feb 6) at the JZ Club featuring a slew of great musicians. Others will take place at larger public venues, like the Oriental Arts Center and the Shanghai Concert Hall, with tickets priced very affordably and radio broadcasts of some of them as well.
JZ Club has done extravaganza-type events like this in the past, both for holidays as well as for things like Smart Shanghai’s Social Series jazz events that have been held there. In all of these shows, there has been 4 or 5 bands playing one after the other at the club, and that’s exactly what will be happening this CNY eve. The lineup will be as follows:
21:30 Kuzu Band (from Xinjiang)
22:30 Oleg Roschin + Ren Yuqing + Chris Trczinski
23:00 Countdown Septet: Alec Haavik, Doug Martin, JQ Whitcomb, Huang Jianyi, Hu Qingwen, EJ Parker,
and Chris Trczinski
00:30 The Singersâ?? Celebration
There will be a jazz-funk show at the Oriental Arts Center on February 9, consisting of an 8-piece group headed by tenor saxophonist Tang Ying. It is advertised on the culture.sh.cn ticket website as the “Shanghai Big Jazz Band“, and the series is called “Oriental Citizen Concerts.” The show will be all original music written and arranged by Tang Ying, mostly in a jazz-funk fusion style.
On February 10, a Latin jazz concert will take place as one of the Weekly Radio Broadcast Concerts. It’s billed as the “Jazz New Year Concert.” It will feature a 12-piece group playing lots of classic Chinese songs in a Latin jazz style, as well as some straight-ahead Latin jazz.
