JZ Jazz music school to open this fall
This school is the latest project coming out of the JZ group, and will be set up to teach all aspects of jazz music and profession to all levels and ages of students. The school will also teach English language classes, both general usage English as well as jazz- and music-specific English. Located in a beautiful old lane house right around the corner from JZ club’s fuxing rd location, it will also offer private lessons, group instrument lessons, and will also offer a complete course of study to prepare students for a professional career as a jazz musician or composer. The school plans to begin accepting student applications later this month, with the first term beginning in the middle of September.
Until this new jazz school opens, the only formal jazz education in Shanghai will have been a few elective classes offered at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. I think this is a major step for the development of the scene here, because it will give many Chinese people the opportunity to study jazz in depth without having to go abroad. Even those who want to study jazz but might not have the necessary financial support can apply for scholarships the school plans to set up.
JZ music design catalog
The JZ group has also recently been preparing another new sector, “JZ music design.” They recently printed a brochure that people can “order” jazz ensembles from for their events. The booklet contains pictures and descriptions of many locally-based jazz groups as well as individual musicians, both Chinese and foreign. Interested parties can either elect to hire a band that is already established, or can select individual players to make a custom arrangement according to any special requirements a client might have.
Both the JZ Jazz school and the JZ music design catalog should have their own websites soon, I will post the URLs as soon as I know them.
