And a book about Shanghai’s current Jazz Scene

Forthcoming photo book will feature the photography of Alice Jagtman

Pianist at JZ clubI got the chance today to preview a few of the shots Alice has been taking over the last few years of musicians in Shanghai, many of which will be featured in the upcoming book. From the Shanghai Jazz Book Project sponsorship proposal:

A new photographic book dedicated to Shanghai’s jazz culture and its jazz artists. Project headed by Marianne Kaulima, with photography by Alice Jagtman and text by Bianca Mac-Intosh. Book to be distributed both locally and internationally.

The photos I got to see all look fantastic, and feature artists from all of Shanghai’s main jazz venues including JZ, Cotton Club, the House of Blues and Jazz, the Portman Jazz bar, and others. They are all black-and-white, which seems to be the standard for jazz photography. The book will feature interviews with local Chinese musicians as well as locally-based foreign musicians, as well as writings about Shanghai’s jazz history, current jazz scene, and anything else relevant. Its release date is set approximately for March 2007, subject to sponsorship and other factors. If anyone is interested in sponsoring this project, contact me through the form and I’ll put you in touch with the right people.
