Review: Scherr Trio at JZ
My gig was unexpectedly canceled so I did end up getting to see this show after all. I’m sure glad I did, I think I needed some inspiration more than I needed the 75 bucks I would have made at the gig.?? It’s been a while since I’ve heard something fun and different, especially with this kind of serious group listening and interaction.
What a sweet show. These guys are all top-notch musicians individually, both in technique and creativity, but their unified sense of ensemble is really what drove this show home for me. They played a mix of more outside experimental stuff with some beautiful major-chord based folky things, with lots of free segues connecting songs together so that an “ending” would only happen once or twice per set. I always look forward to the fact that there’s always some degree of experimental wackiness happening in anything Peter does, and in a different way each time.
Hong Kong-based Scherr brought these two Sydney-based players to Shanghai once before, long, long ago in the days of the old JZ location (2 years ago). I remember them sounding great then as well. On this tour they’ve been to Beijing and Qingdao already, and now they’ll be back to Hong Kong to finish up with a few shows before the boys head back down under.
