Wednesday night at JZ was an extravaganza featuring many of the bands that play regularly there, all in one night. The five bands featured were JR, Doc’s monday night quartet, Erica’s wednesday band, Coco’s quintet, and the JZ all-star band.
JR sounded great as always, pulling off some new material it sounded like. They’ve been getting back into the land of the working musician again recently, playing regularly every second tuesday night at JZ starting in the last month or two. They might begin playing other regular shows at some other venues soon…stay tuned for details on that.
Doc and the monday night boys laid it down solid like they do every time they play, with some especially hopping energy this night. Simon Wu has been playing alto sax with Dwight’s monday band regularly for a few months now and the group dynamic is continuing to reach new heights.
Erica Lee brought the show another direction with her scintillating third set of R&B, and then Coco enchanted the audience with melodies of old Shanghai for the fourth. The fifth set was a JZ all-star sextet playing some arrangements by EJ Parker, also featuring Coco on a couple tunes.
